Animals may be more reliably emotional than humans

چکیده

Despite considerable advances in the study of animal sentience, reluctance to credit non-human animals with emotional capacities persists. I argue that this is untenable light (evolutionary) theory and empirical evidence. Humans may differ from their ability reflect on, reason about, deliberately regulate emotions. If anything, however, implies animals’ displays provide a more valid reliable window into internal states than do humans’, whose be strategically altered. Any signs pleasure or distress thus constitute direct readouts wellbeing. It time we start treating accordingly.

Thinking may be more than computing.

The uncomputable parts of thinking (if there are any) can be studied in much the same spirit that Turing (1950) suggested for the study of its computable parts. We can develop precise accounts of cognitive processes that, although they involve more than computing, can still be modelled on the machines we call ‘computers’. In this paper, I want to suggest some ways that this might be done, using...

Can Virtual Humans Be More Engaging Than Real Ones?

Emotional bonds don’t arise from a simple exchange of facial displays, but often emerge through the dynamic give and take of face-to-face interactions. This article explores the phenomenon of rapport, a feeling of connectedness that seems to arise from rapid and contingent positive feedback between partners and is often associated with socio-emotional processes. Rapport has been argued to lead ...

Animals may not be stuck in time !

Humans have the ability to mentally travel forward and back in time. They can retrieve vivid memories of past events (episodic memories) and can imagine the future (planning). Although it has been suggested that this is a uniquely human ability, the evidence for subjective time travel in humans is typically based on verbal report and elaboration. Such evidence cannot be obtained from animals. H...
